Joan, who has had no formal artistic training, started painting for pleasure during the early eighties whilst living in South Africa taking her inspiration from the African ambience. However, it was not long before she found that painting and caring for a toddler were not compatible and her artistic aspirations had to be put on hold. Returning to England in 1984 she settled in Leeds
with her husband and young daughter, her time and energies given over to
home responsibilities as well as contributing to making a living.
In 2003 her life was abruptly changed when cancer was diagnosed causing
her to re-evaluate her life’s priorities. It was at this time that her artistic
desires re-emerged and she was soon creating new works of art.
Her love of nature and animals as well as the world around her are
exemplified in the beautiful artistic interpretations of the life she loves and evident in her work.
